Psychotherapy and non-pharmacological treatments

Dr. Carroll will describe recent developments in empirically supported psychotherapies and behavioral therapies for the addictions, with emphasis on motivational interviewing, contingency management, and cognitive behavioral approaches. She will discuss the role of these therapies in the treatment of addictions, including combining these therapies with approved pharmacotherapies. She will also describe emerging evidence regarding effects of these therapies on brain function that highlight biological effects of behavioral treatments. Finally, she will describe challenges in moving empirically validated psychotherapies into clinical practice and the promise of newer web-based treatment delivery systems.
